Sophie Unsen
A lover of all types of music and the arts, Sophie began her music career at primary school. Since then she has performed extensively nationally and internationally with various ensembles, including the (all female) Sirens Big Band, Sydney Youth Orchestra, Chronology Arts and Besom Saxophone Quartet.
Passionate about music education and creative development, Sophie has been active as a teacher since 2003, enthusing young talent and teaching in school ensembles for The Arts Unit - Department of Education and Training, in NSW Primary and High Schools, and privately. Her involvement with The Arts Unit has also included working as part of a team of tutors on State Music Camp (2004 - 2010), and in 2010 as Production Assistant for Schools Spectacular. This involvement has led to further work with other specialised programs such as the Vibe Alive Festival, a festival for young Australians of all backgrounds that celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.
Sophie undertook study in France at the European University of Saxophone in 2006 with world-renowned pedagogues Claude Delangle and Arno Bornkamp, and has gained her Associate Diploma of Music (2006) and her Licentiate of Music (2007) in Saxophone Performance. She graduated with First Class Honours from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in 2008 majoring in Saxophone, and has continued to expand her knowledge and facility of music and music education by pursuing her interest in Japanese music and aesthetics through Shakuhachi (bamboo flute) and Taiko (drums) study.
Sophie is constantly excited by where her music will take her next and is excited to be a part of the fantastic Jellybeans teaching team.
